Upstart’s Small Dollar Loan team aims to put an end to payday lending by using superior AI and automation to drive down the cost of lending small dollar amounts over short periods of time. Did you know that 49% of Americans don’t have the cash reserves to cover a $400 emergency and traditional payday lenders can charge up to 400% APRs? At Upstart we took a first principles approach to providing borrowers small loan amounts, $250-$2,500, over short periods of time, 3-18 months, with an affordable APR, up to 36%. The Small Dollar Loan team is looking for an engineer passionate about making a difference in the lives of millions of Americans every day!
As a Senior Engineer at Upstart with mobile experience, you will build features which engage our borrowers where they are, on mobile devices and the web. You will lead projects which align the Upstart mobile strategy with the Small Dollar Loan strategy. You will help move the Upstart Mobile platform forward, adding more capabilities to allow all Upstart verticals to build mobile features. This role will report directly to the Director of Engineering for Small Dollar Loans.
How you’ll make an impact:
- Build high quality mobile and web features for the Small Dollar Loans product to engage and delight our customers
- Lead projects from requirements, through design, and into the hands of our customers
- Mentor other engineers
- Collaborate with other engineers on developing northstar designs and engineering strategy
- Review code from other engineers within the team and across Upstart
What we’re looking for:
- Minimum requirements:
- 5+ years of experience developing full stack web applications professionally
- 1+ years of experience developing mobile applications professionally
- Proficiency with either Kotlin, Ruby on Rails, or Python and at least one other programming language
- Proficiency with React
- Solid grasp of software development principles and best practices for creating scalable and maintainable systems
- Proven ability to effectively analyze and solve complex problems
- Preferred qualifications:
- Experience with React Native
- Experience with Kotlin, Ruby, AWS, UI development, and Databricks
- Experience with Next.js and Vercel
- Strong sense of ownership and accountability for the quality and timely delivery of work
- Ability to thrive both in self-directed work environments and in collaborative settings, contributing positively to team dynamics
- Demonstrated ability to take feedback well and actively incorporate it into work with a desire to continuously improve
