Senior GIS Software Engineer

Remote - Poland
Software Development

Samsara’s cloud-connected sensor platform collects observations about the world in near real-time. Samsara builds an extensive set of products, including battery-powered wireless sensors, Linux-based IoT gateways, and Internet-connected dash cams. These devices are the building blocks Samsara uses to construct enterprise solutions for a wide range of verticals, including commercial fleet management and industrial monitoring. Through a unique integration of sensor data such as GPS, acceleration, temperature, video, and more, we enable our customers to gain greater insights into operations, identify and eliminate inefficiencies, and react to alerts all in near real-time.

As a Senior GIS Engineer at Samsara, you will be instrumental in shaping our geospatial capabilities and enhancing our cloud-connected platform. You will become the go-to GIS specialist, providing expert knowledge and guidance to your immediate team and consulting with various departments across the company.

Your primary responsibility will be to build and maintain a robust geospatial data management infrastructure that supports Samsara's strategic goals and operational needs. This involves researching and selecting the best geospatial data solutions on the market. In this role, you will develop processes and tools to optimize geospatial data storage, caching, indexing, and processing, ensuring high-quality control and performance across all geospatial datasets. You will also collaborate with teams such as data engineering, product, and infrastructure to integrate new data sources and enhance the overall quality and intelligence of our geospatial data.

This is a remote position open to candidates based in Poland. Relocation assistance will not be provided for this role.

You should apply if:

  • You want to impact the industries that run our world: Every phone call you answer and every email you send can affect whether truck drivers deliver goods on time and without accidents, whether students get dropped off safely from school, or whether power gets restored quickly after a natural disaster.
  • You thrive the most when solving problems: Our constantly expanding technology and the complexities faced by our customers provide an exciting range of challenges for our Customer Success teams. With a growth mindset and a desire to learn, you will strategically partner with our customers to find unique solutions to help keep their operations safe, efficient, and sustainable.
  • You are a natural relationship builder: Whether the relationship is with our customers or with cross-functional teams in Samsara, you are in constant communication and collaboration with key stakeholders to win as a team.
  • You are the architect of your own career: If you put in the work, this role won’t be your last at Samsara. This Customer Success team is still shaping its future and you will have plenty of autonomy and opportunities to master your craft in a hyper growth environment.
  • You want to be with the best: At Samsara, we win together, celebrate together and support each other. You will be surrounded by the best and brightest professionals out there.

In this role, you will:

  • Be the GIS expert for Samsara, providing specialized knowledge and guidance within your immediate team as well as consulting with other teams across the company.
  • Build and maintain effective geospatial data infrastructure, services, and processes to support Samsara's operations and strategic initiatives.
  • Conduct research to identify and select the best geospatial data solutions available in the market, ensuring they align with the company's needs and goals. This includes optimizing data storage, caching, and indexing solutions.
  • Create processes and tools for the effective use of geospatial data in data collection, transformation, and consumption, performing quality control checks to ensure data accuracy and reliability.
  • Collaborate with other teams, such as data engineering, product, and infrastructure, to integrate new data sources and enhance the overall quality and intelligence of geospatial data.

Minimum requirements for the role:

  • 7+ years of experience working with geospatial data systems, including storage and processing.
  • Proven experience in managing and optimizing large-scale geospatial datasets, including performing spatial joins and other geospatial data transformations.
  • Proficiency in programming languages relevant to geospatial data management, such as Python, SQL, or JavaScript.
  • Strong understanding of spatial data formats, databases (e.g., PostGIS), and geospatial analysis techniques.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to conduct research to identify the most efficient solutions for complex geospatial tasks.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to effectively work with cross-functional teams.

An ideal candidate also has:

  • Experience with routing services and algorithms, including OSRM, Valhalla, or similar tools.
  • Experience with geospatial data processing technologies, such as Uber H3 or Apache Sedona.
  • Experience in designing and optimizing data architectures for geospatial intelligence applications.
  • Technical understanding of transportation and logistics planning is an advantage.
