Senior Data Engineer

Remote
Data

Who you are:

The Senior Data Engineer should be seen as an experienced data engineer who is a master of data processing, data modeling, and data storage technologies. The Senior Data Engineer is capable of owning the technical design for data projects of moderate complexity and understands the tradeoffs in creating effective data solutions. They hold a depth of knowledge in data systems that enables them to debug those systems effectively. In addition to designing and implementing consistently high-quality data pipelines, they are aware of industry best practices and trends, and have acquired at least one major specialty such as data warehousing, big data processing, data analytics, or sql optimization.

The Senior Data Engineer gets a lot done. They are responsible for complex tasks and complete them despite roadblocks, grabbing others for help or insight as necessary. The Senior Data Engineer requires very little oversight beyond high-level direction; they can take a complex data requirement, break it down into sub-tasks, and complete their sub-tasks with relative ease. The Senior Data Engineer shows initiative beyond knocking tasks off a list; they are able to identify and suggest areas of future work for themselves or their teams. They seek evidence to support their ideas and start to build cases for these ideas. They deliver data products that they believe are well-structured and reliable.

The Senior Data Engineer has end-to-end responsibility for data projects of increasing complexity that encompass more than their own development. They contribute to the common data architecture and standards for the team. They understand the business that their data solutions support, and possess empathy for the users of their data; they use this understanding to influence their task prioritization. They assist in identifying and validating data quality metrics and can identify data regression risks in their features. In general, they can identify risks in data pipelines, data models, and design, and communicate these to the appropriate parties.

The Senior Data Engineer is known outside of their core team as a data technology leader. They participate extensively in data architecture reviews and mentor others via code reviews, pairing, and sharing best practices. They work effectively with non-tech members of the company, such as data analysts and business stakeholders. They are able to identify problems with data requirements and help their team course-correct around these issues.

Above all, they want to build data solutions that fundamentally improve the lives of families.
