The Team: 

Upstart’s Servicing Vertical is responsible for the lifecycle of each and every loan, ensuring an exceptional experience for every borrower. Our Servicing Core Platform team is specifically responsible for building and maintaining a componentized, distributed Servicing Platform that connects all other functional areas within Servicing. The team’s goal is to create a SaaS platform that is best in class among financial institutions.

As the Principal Software Engineer on the team, you will collaborate with stakeholders across Upstart’s entire business and all engineering teams, including Machine Learning, Data Engineering, Product Management, Product Design, and the other Servicing Engineering teams. You will report directly to a Director of Engineering and will lead the  Core Platform team in architecting the future of our Servicing system. Your goal will be  to autonomously identify and prioritize high impact work that will ultimately pave the way to a world class Servicing solution.

How you’ll make an impact

  • Help define the Core Platform  engineering team’s long term technical roadmap, ensuring alignment with business objectives
  • Guide the architectural evolution of the Servicing  engineering ecosystem
  • Uncover and drive alignment across complex technical requirements, designs and  trade-offs, influencing product direction  
  • Proactively evaluate, prototype, and roll out new technologies/frameworks to help cultivate a culture of innovation
  • Partner with product leaders to shape product direction and drive business impact across all Servicing products
  • Lead from the front, while mentoring and developing technical leaders

Minimum Qualifications 

  • 10+ years software engineering experience 
  • Strong technical and software engineering fundamentals including a demonstrated ability to build and own large-scale, highly available services that integrate across various parts of the business
  • Ability to explain complex business and technical concepts to all audiences
  • Experience leading large cross-team initiatives at companies that have gone through periods of rapid business or organizational growth
  • Track record of successfully mentoring and developing technical leaders
  • Experience building componentized software with event-driven architecture

Preferred Qualifications

  • Has defined and executed on longer term (multi-quarter +) technological visions or strategies for multi-team organizations
  • Has driven initiatives of significant depth and/or breadth with demonstrated results in engineering process, technology platforms, or overall productivity of others
  • Ability to identify gaps in organizational knowledge, tools, and practices and produce and execute on plans to address those gaps
  • Ability to influence and lead without direct authority
  • Strong product and analytical mindset that allows you to think in terms of ROI, risk, and trade offs

Travel requirements As a digital first company, the majority of your work can be accomplished remotely. The majority of our employees can live and work anywhere in the U.S but are encouraged to to still spend high quality time in-person collaborating via regular onsites. The in-person sessions’ cadence varies depending on the team and role; most teams meet once or twice per quarter for 2-4 consecutive days at a time.
