Job Description

The primary purpose of the Backup Management Engineer role is to ensure the reliability, efficiency, and integrity of our backup systems within the Hosting Team. This involves managing all aspects of the Commvault backup environment to guarantee that all data backup and restore operations are performed seamlessly, securely, and in compliance with Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and regulatory requirements. In this role, we expect you to be confident, proactive, and unafraid to challenge existing solutions and recommend best practices.

As a Commvault Backup Engineer, your technical expertise and proactive approach to addressing technical challenges will contribute to the continuous improvement of our backup infrastructure. Adherence to company policies and procedures will be of utmost importance as you uphold our standards of excellence. Your role is integral to maintaining the trust and satisfaction of our clients by ensuring their data is secure, accessible, and recoverable at all times.

  • Backup Management and Optimization:
    • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Commvault backup environment.
    • Monitor backup jobs, ensuring timely and successful completion.
    • Perform regular checks to ensure data integrity and reliability.
    • Continuously monitor and analyze backup processes to optimize performance, efficiency, and reliability.
    • Implement and maintain backup policies and procedures to align with best practices and business needs.
  • Restore Operations:
    • Manage and execute data restores in response to client and internal requests, ensuring timely and accurate recovery of data.
    • Validate and verify the integrity of restored data to ensure consistency and reliability.
    • Ensure restores are performed accurately and within SLA timelines.
  • System Maintenance and Upgrades:
    • Perform routine maintenance and updates on Commvault software and associated hardware components to keep systems up-to-date and functioning optimally.
    • Plan and implement upgrades to the backup infrastructure to leverage new features and improvements in Commvault technology.
  • Compliance and Reporting:
    • Ensure all backup operations comply with relevant SLAs, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
    • Generate comprehensive reports on backup performance, compliance metrics, and operational efficiency to provide clear insights to management and stakeholders.
  • Technical Support and Troubleshooting:
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for technical issues related to backups, providing expert-level troubleshooting and resolution.
    • Collaborate with other IT teams to address and resolve complex technical challenges, ensuring a robust and resilient backup environment.
    • Document solutions and share knowledge with the team to improve collective expertise.
  • Continuous Improvement and Innovation:
    • Stay informed about the latest developments in Commvault technology and industry best practices, implementing enhancements to improve backup operations.
    • Participate in disaster recovery planning and testing to ensure effective and reliable data recovery processes.
    • Actively seek opportunities for service and process improvements, driving innovation and efficiency in backup management.
  • Collaboration and Mentoring:
    • Work closely with Technical Services colleagues and Project Teams to deliver new services, upgrades, and BAU support.
    • Provide technical guidance and support to the wider team, serving as a mentor to junior members and assisting with escalations to aid incident and problem resolution.
  • Security Assurance:
    • Continuously provide security assurance for all backup services, ensuring that data protection measures are robust and compliant with industry standards.
    • Identify and mitigate potential security risks in the backup environment.

Qualifications

Skills & Experience

  • Education and Certifications:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
    • Relevant certifications such as Commvault Certified Engineer (CCE) or equivalent are highly desirable.
    • ITIL v4 Foundation
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 3 years of experience managing Commvault backup environments.
    • Proven experience in a managed services environment.
    • Strong background in IT infrastructure and data management.
  • Skills and Competencies:
    • In-depth knowledge of Commvault software and its various components.
    • Proficient in backup and restore operations, including disaster recovery.
    • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
    • Excellent understanding of SLA compliance and reporting.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Strong communication and documentation skills.
    • Familiarity with other backup solutions and technologies is a plus.

Additional Information

  • Must have the right to live and work in the UK. 
  • Due to our location, access to own transport is essential.
  • Travel to Cambridge location will be required and expected; weekly for candidates based in the Cambridge area and monthly for remote candidates
